There are lots of ways you can prepare your home for the market, with a bit of effort and common sense.  Simply look at your house as if you were a Buyer.  Make the corrections that you would want if you want to buy your home.  Here are a few ideas:

  • Remove Clutter, including items in garage and closets
  • Properly store garden tools
  • Repaint to brighten up a room, and fix marks on the wall
  • Wash windows, screens and light fixtures
  • Maintain spotless look, including floors, mirrors, bathrooms, appliances and light switch plates
  • Eliminate odours, including smoke, pet smells and cooking smells
  • Have carpets professionally cleaned
  • Brighten up rooms with higher wattage in light fixtures.  Replace burnt out lights
  • Perform minor repairs wherever you see them.  ie sticky doors, locks, squeaky hinges, cracked caulking, torn screens, paint scratches, dripping faucets, etc.
  • Tidy your yard, deck, patio and lawn.  Mow, trim, rake as required.  Pot some fresh flowers in the garden close to the entrance of your home
  • Patch driveway erosion and apply sealant
  • Trim trees, shrubs and bushes
  • Clean gutters
  • Polish door numbers and hardware to increase curb appeal
  • Display fresh flowers to add colour, contrast and fragrance
  • Use room scenters and/or fresh (not heavy smelling) pot pourri
